essay on child marriage

Marriage Sanskars and Role- In Hindu culture, there are sixteen types of festivals from the birth of a person to death, which are named Sanskars. In which marriage is considered an important sacrament. In each round, marriage was approved as a bond of two sacred feelings, which should accompany each other for the next seven births.

With the changing times, many types of evils got involved in the marriage ceremony and due to these evils, the marriage system became a victim of perversion. One form of which we see in the form of child marriage or mismatched marriage. This is proving to be a curse for Indian society.

Malpractice of child marriage- It is not that child marriage was prevalent in the Indian social system from the beginning, there is no such indication in the Vedic period. By the time of medieval times, when India was facing external invasions, foreign rulers used to abduct daughters considering them as objects of enjoyment and making relations with them.

In this period, the evil practice of roti beti became prevalent. Keeping their daughter in the house had become a difficult task for the poor and lower-class people, so they started marrying their daughters in their childhood. Due to the dowry system, even today, child marriages are happening indiscriminately in Indian society.

There came a time in the medieval period when the birth of a girl child was considered inauspicious. Due to a lack of education and lack of freedom, girls could not even oppose it. Due to getting married at a young age, dowry also had to be given less. For this reason, the practice of child marriage has taken deep roots in middle and lower-class families.

Marrying children at an early age affects their health, mental development, and happy life. Marrying at an early age leads to backwardness in the whole society. That's why the law of our country has fixed an age for marriage for boys and girls. Marrying below this age is called child marriage.

If the age of the girl getting married is less than 18 years or the age of the boy is less than 21 years, then that marriage will be called child marriage. Such marriage is completely prohibited in our law. There can be many legal consequences of such a marriage.

  • If a boy above 18 years of age marries a girl below 18 years of age, he shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with a fine which may extend to one lakh rupees, or with both.
  • Whoever is the child in the married couple can get the marriage annulled by the court. An application can be made in court anytime after marriage. And even after two years of being a child.

Is.

The curse of child marriage- except in a few countries, the minimum age of marriage has been fixed in almost all countries, in India the boy's age is 21 years and the girl's age is 18 years. By getting married when they become adults, they realize the importance and responsibilities of the bond of marriage.

Kanyadaan is considered to be of great importance in the customs of Indian marriages. At the time of marriage, some money was given by the father's side of the daughter according to their ability. Gradually, this practice also got perverted and the daughter was considered a burden. Parents started freeing themselves from their responsibilities by getting their daughters married in their childhood.

These practices, which started for a little convenience, have become the curse of the daughter's life today. This wrong tradition is being carried forward continuously. The daughter is given in marriage at an early age, due to which many kinds of problems start arising. Marriage at an early age not only hinders the physical and mental health of the girl child but also due to early progeny, the population is also increasing unlimitedly. For all these reasons, child marriage is a curse for civilized society.

Measures to stop the problem of child marriage- From time to time, social reformers have made efforts to eradicate such malpractices. Our Parliament has also made strict laws to prohibit child marriage and fixed the minimum age of marriage for boys and girls.

Marriage before the minimum age of marriage is considered child marriage and it is counted in the category of illegal crime. Child marriages are still taking place in our country despite the provision of severe punishment and fines to both parties upon receiving the complaint of child marriage.

Instead of the strictness of the law, if efforts are made to end child marriage through public awareness, then it can be a more effective step. Now the Honorable Supreme Court has made marriage registration of every person mandatory. This step of the court will also help in reducing child marriages. In this way, for the eradication of child marriage, there is a need to make coordinated efforts at both these levels, the government, and society.
